b. Feldkirch (Vorarlberg), May 2, 1935, law scholar and civil servant. 
Studied Law at the University of Innsbruck, 1962-1969 judge in 
Vorarlberg, 1969-1971 civil servant at the Ministry of Education. 
1971-1974 Cultural attache in Warsaw. 1974-1982 in the Cultural 
attache at the Austrian Embassy in Moscow, 1986-1993 Department head 
in the Ministry of Science responsible for scientific libraries, 
federal museums and the protection of monuments. 1993-2001 
Director-General of the  Austrian National Library.
