!!!Matejka, Viktor

b. Korneuburg (Lower Austria), Dec. 4, 1901, 
d. Vienna, April 2, 1993, cultural politician and writer. Until 1936 
official responsible for educational issues in the Chamber of Labour, 
active in adult education in Vienna. 1938 to 1944 imprisoned in the 
concentration camps Dachau and Flossenbuerg. 1945 as representative of 
the Austrian Communist Party (KPOe), Municipal Councillor for Cultural 
and Popular Education in Vienna (Coalition of SPOe, OeVP and KPOe). M. 
supported numerous famous contemporary artists and helped them return 
from exile. (e.g. O.  Kokoschka). When the KPOe lost votes in 1949, M. 
left the Vienna Provincial Government; 1966 left the KPOe and became a 
freelance writer and supporter of young artists.
