b. Prague (Czech Republic), April 13, 1840, 
d. Vienna, Oct. 20, 1894, ophthalmologist. Major achievements in the 
field of ophthalmoscopy and refraction; 1894 Chairman of the 1st 
Optical University Department in Vienna; excellent surgeon. Introduced 
sclerotomy for the treatment of glaucoma. M's Membrane is named after 
him. Professor at the Universities of Innsbruck (1869) and Vienna 
(1877).
