b. Cologne (Germany), June 5, 1884, 
d. Linz, July 28, 1923, painter and graphic artist. Trained at the 
Academy of Munich (student of W. von Dietz and A. Jank), 1914 
married P. Pillesmueller, a painter from Linz, and continued to live 
in Linz, where he founded the group "Der Ring" and in 1920 a school of 
art which strongly influenced the development of modern painting in 
Upper Austria. His paintings remain characterized by elements of 
impressionism but also show expressionist tendencies, particularly in 
his use of colour.
