b. 1869; Julius  Meinl b. 1903). First store opened in 1862 on Fleischmarkt square in Vienna by J. (b. Kraslice, Czech Republic, April 10, 1824, 
d. Vienna, Dec. 24, 1914); developed into one of the leading Central 
European corporations with 462 subsidiaries (1994) and a staff of 
9,725. In 1999 and 2000 all subsidiaries, except for a speciality 
store on the Graben in Vienna, were sold, mainly to the  Billa group 
and to  SPAR Oesterreichische Warenhandels-AG; the chain in Hungary, 
founded in 1989, was also spun off. The new focus is on the expansion 
in other Eastern European countries, the production and trade of 
coffee and marmalade and on the business of Meinlbank, as well as 
interests in international industrial companies.
