b. Znojmo, Czech Republic (then Znaim), Feb. 5, 1881, 
d. Vienna, June 11, 1964, pedagogue, philologist, cultural 
philosopher. 1923-1938 university professor of pedagogy, 1938-1945 of 
classical philology, 1945-1956 again of pedagogy at the University of 
Vienna (1949/1950 rector); 1945-1951 vice president, 1951-1963 
president of the Austrian  Academy of Sciences. Strong influence on 
the educational policy of the 1st Republic, finally gave pedagogy 
scientific status ("three-zones theory") and linked it with cultural 
philosophy.
