!!!Merkel, Inge

b. Vienna, Oct. 1, 1922, writer. Studied classical philology, history, 
German language and literature in Vienna, teaching assistant at the 
Department of Classical Philology at Vienna University, 
secondary-school teacher of Latin 1974-84. Her first novel, "Das 
andere Gesicht" (1982), was originally not intended for 
publication but on publication immediately earned her considerable 
recognition. Alongside  her masterly use of language and form, her 
work is in characterised by her deep interest in the history of 
European thought. Outstanding Merit Prize of the Association of 
Austrian Booksellers for Tolerance in Thought and Action,1992.
