Michaelbeuern Monastery, province of Salzburg, Benedictine abbey 
(founded around 785; abolished between 1942-1945) in the municipality 
of Dorfbeuern in the Flachgau region. First documented mention in 817, 
1072 consecration of an abbey church. Romanesque pier basilica, late 
Gothic choir; in the 17%%sup th/%  century the whole church was 
converted in Baroque style, 1938-1950 reconverted in Romanesque. High 
altar from 1691 (sculptures by M. Guggenbichler, altarpiece by M. 
Rottmayr). Abbey library with the "Walther-Bibel" (2%%sup nd/%  
quarter of the 12%%sup th/%  century); art collection.
