Micheldorf in Oberoesterreich, Upper Austria, market town in the 
district of Kirchdorf an der Krems, alt. 465 m, pop. 4,870, area 
50.30 km%%sup 2/%, commercial and industrial centre in the upper 
Kremstal valley. - 1,722 persons employed (1991), about 71 % of 
which in trade and industry: mechanical engineering, plastics 
technology, moulding, and wood processing (furniture and parquet 
factories) industries, spun concrete plant, metal working industry, 
(toolmaking, machine building, furnace manufacture); shopping centre, 
tourism. - In former times centre of scythe production (16%%sup th/%  
to 19%%sup th/%  centuries), old scythe shops with late Baroque gable 
façades. Scythe shop museum; parish church of St. Josef, 
built 1946-1953. On Georgenberg Hill (594 m), fortifications of the La 
Tène culture and of Late Antiquity; in the choir of the Gothic 
subsidiary church, converted in Baroque style, the apse of an early 
Christian or Romanesque church has been exposed; graves from the 
9%%sup th/% /10%%sup th/%  centuries; "Pfusterkreuz" cross (1735) of 
wrought iron; Altpernstein Castle (first documented mention in 1147), 
from the 16%%sup th/% /17%%sup th/%  centuries, with knights´ 
hall, kitchen and armory, castle chapel with stucco work (1626); 
traditional Georgiritt (St. George procession on horseback).
