b. Lvív, Ukraine (then Lemberg), Sept. 29, 1881, 
d. New York (USA), Oct. 10, 1973, political economist, brother of 
Richard von  Mises. Studied law in Vienna, from 1906 member of Chamber 
of Trade and Commerce in Vienna (head of the financial department); 
1918 professor at the University of Vienna and from 1934 teacher at 
the Institut des Hautes Études Internationales in Geneva. 1938 
dismissed by the National Socialists, 1940 emigrated to the USA; 
1945-1969 lecturer at the Graduate School of Business Administration, 
New York University. In 1927 founded with F. A. von  Hayek the 
Vienna Institute for Business Research (today Oesterreichisches 
Institut fuer  Wirtschaftsforschung ).
