Mistelbach, Lower Austria, town in the district of Mistelbach, alt. 
190 m, pop. 10,234, area 131.25 km%%sup 2/%, trade centre, 
traffic junction and school centre near the mouth of the Mistelbach 
stream into the Zaya river, in the north-eastern part of the 
Weinviertel region. - District commission, local court, employment 
services, office of weights, measures and surveying, Bolfras Barracks, 
federal vintner's inspectorate, hospital, economic chamber, chamber of 
labour, local chamber of agriculture, local health and insurance 
agency, psychosocial centre, centre for marriage, family and life 
counselling of the Archdiocese of Vienna, Kolpinghaus centre, sports 
centre, public adventure bath, artificial skating rink, centre for 
adult and extra-curricular education (Volkshochschule), town library, 
several types of secondary schools like 
Bundes-Oberstufen-Realgymnasium, Handelsakademie (commercial academy), 
Fachschule (college) for economic professions, federal school 
(Bundesanstalt) for kindergarten paedagogics, vocational school, 
agricultural Fachschule (college), nursing school, school for 
medico-technical professions (Schule fuer den medizinisch-technischen 
Fachdienst), foreign-language school (private); service sector 
dominates, with about 81 % of 4,475 persons employed (1991): 
especially personal, social and public services (hospital is the main 
employer in the district); production sector: farm equipment factory, 
wood processing industry. - First documented mention around 1125-1130, 
status of a town since 1874. Late Gothic parish church with south 
tower, upper floors adapted in Baroque style, Baroque high altar 
(1735); cemetery with defensive wall; 1719 St. Catharine chapel 
converted in Baroque style (former Romanesque round charnel house, 
early 13%%sup th/%  century); parsonage (former provostry, 1687-1700) 
with ceiling fresco (1760) by M. A. Maulbertsch in the library, 
beneficiary house (end of 15%%sup th/%  century); small palace 
(1724-1742; town hall (1901); Trinity column (1680).
