Mitterbach am Erlaufsee, Lower Austria, municipality in the district 
of Lilienfeld, alt. 789 m, pop. 667, area 67.28 km%%sup 2/%, 
summer and winter sports resort (43,276 overnight stays) at the 
eastern foot of Gemeindealpe mountain (1,626 m), at the Lower 
Austrian-Styrian border; with  Josefsberg skiing area. Transmitting 
station of the Austrian broadcasting corporation ORF on Gemeindealpe 
hill; hotel and restaurant businesses. - Catholic parish church 
(1914/15, 1967 extended) with crib from the Biedermeier period; 
Protestant parish church (1785) enlarged in the 19%%sup th/%  century. 
Nearby, Erlaufstauseen reservoirs with electric power station 
(originally for operating the Mariazeller Bahn railway) and Lake 
Erlauf; northwest of Mitterbach am Erlaufsee, Oetschergraeben gorge 
with waterfalls, Oetscher mountain (1,893 m) with ice caves.
