!!!Mitterhofer, Peter

b. Partschins/Parcines (South Tyrol), Sept. 20, 1822,
d. Partschins, Aug. 27, 1893, joiner and inventor. Between
1864-1869 built five typewriters, 4 of which have been preserved
(Vienna, Bozen/Bolzano and Dresden). The first two models were made of
wood, the others of metal. The last model in 1869 had all the
fundamental constructional details of a mechanical typewriter (type
basket, margin setter, numeric keyboard, platen, automatic line feed
and multistep mechanism). M. presented his inventions at the imperial
court in Vienna in 1864 and 1866 and received 200 and 150 gulden for
them; however, the Polytechnical Institute did not support him.
Embittered he hid his type writers in the attic, where they were found
in 1905 and 1911.
