Mittersill, province of Salzburg, market town in the district of Zell 
am See, alt. 790 m, pop. 5,427, area 132.04 km%%sup 2/%, 
bi-seasonal tourist resort (352,438 overnight stays) on the Salzach 
river, where the Felbertal valley joins the Salzach valley, main town 
in the Oberpinzgau region, traffic junction (Felbertauern, Pass Thurn, 
Gerlos and Mittersill); National Park Hohe Tauern. - Local court, 
Felbertal landwehr camp of the Austrian Army, forestry enterprise of 
the Oesterreichische Bundesforste AG (Austrian Federal Forests), 
Austrian mountain rescue squad, local health and insurance office, 
hospital, Protestant pastoral care station, 
Bundes-Oberstufen-Realgymnasium (secondary school); 2,499 persons 
employed (1991), mixed economic structure, mainly trade; service 
sector: personal, social and public services, restaurant business; 
production sector ("Industrial Area West"): Blizzard ski factory, flag 
factory, furniture production and trade, building and construction 
industry, the mining of wolfram ores recommenced in 1996. -Town 
foundation planned in the 13%%sup th/%  century, first documented 
mention 1357. Baroque parish church (1747-1749) with stained glass 
(1840), high altar with altarpiece panel by D. Mascagni (around 1618) 
and Rococo pulpit (1765); Baroque St. Anna Church (1751) with 
ceiling painting by C. A. Mayr (1753); M. Castle (first 
documented mention 1180) rebuilt after a fire in 1938, with late 
Gothic chapel (winged altar, 15%%sup th/%  century) in the "Hexenturm" 
("Witch Tower"); Einoedberg Castle (in Rettenbach, oldest part 
13%%sup th/%  century, reconstructed 15%%sup th/%  century); in 
Felben, St. Nicholas Church with mainly Romanesque nave, 
pilgrimage chapel of Maria am Anger; Felberturm tower (first 
documented mention 1332, today museum of local history and culture); 
Tauernhaus farmhouse (built 16%%sup th/%  century).
