d. Vienna, Feb. 13, 1897, actor. 1871 at the Burgtheater (heroic
and character roles, including Faust and Mephisto, as well as
conflicting, demonic characters). Pioneered naturalness in acting.
1879-1884 main director at the Stadttheater, 1884 manager of the
Carltheater in Vienna; 1886-1894 guest performances in Germany,
Holland and the USA; 1894-1897 final return to Burgtheater. Also guest
speaker and writer (burlesques: Ein Sieg der Geschichte, Strohfeuer,
Ein Hausmittel, Der liebe Cousin, Edgars Kammermaedchen).
