b. Brno, Czech Republic (then Bruenn), Dec. 6, 1856, 
d. Vienna, Dec. 8, 1937, botanist, plant physiologist, expert in 
microscopic-experimental botany, co-founder of the microchemistry of 
plants. 1889-1928 professor at the Universities of Graz, Prague and 
Vienna, 1931-1937 vice-president of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. 
1897/98 undertook a botanical expedition around the world. Taught 
between 1922-1925 in Japan, 1928/29 in India. M. furnished proof of 
the glucose which was then named after him and wrote text books of 
fundamental significance.
