b. Munich (Germany), Feb. 26, 1902, 
d. Vienna, Dec. 16, 1958, conductor, nephew of R.  Strauss. 
1937-1940 director of the opera house in Graz, 1938-1940 guest 
conductor, from 1940 first conductor of the Vienna State Opera, 1952 
at the Salzburg Festival. Particularly famous for his interpretations 
of Mozart, Wagner and Strauss.
