Morgarten Pass, head of a pass (1,244 m) in central Switzerland. 
In the Battle of Morgarten (November 15, 1315) the Austrian duke 
Leopold I suffered a heavy defeat in an attempt to subject Swiss 
peasants to Habsburg rule again; also marked the beginning of the 
Habsburgs loss of their Swiss possessions.
