b. Vienna, Oct. 5, 1924 Writer. Emigrated to London in 1939, worked 
there as a baker, went to the USA in 1940; studied food chemistry, 
worked in an industrial laboratory; from 1949 concentrated on 
literature and the social sciences and soon started publishing his own 
books and articles. Most of his works are written in English; his 
world-wide breakthrough came in 1962 with "The Rothschilds. A 
Family Portrait" Many of his novels deal with Austrian history. 
Twice nominated for the  National Book Award.
