b. Jenbach (Tyrol), March 15, 1901, 
d. Mils (Tyrol), July 22, 1988, philosopher and amateur 
photographer. Studied philosophy (doctorate under M. Heidegger) and 
political economy; Habilitation 1935, then lecturer in Innsbruck and 
Vienna. After 1945 co-founder and head of the  Europaeisches Forum 
Alpbach , 1952 at the University of Technology in Karlsruhe. Became 
famous through his documentary photographs depicting rural life.
