b. Augsburg (Germany), Feb. 5, 1846, 
d. New York (USA), March 17, 1906, labour leader. From 1869 
influenced the "radicals" of the Austrian  Labour Movement and played 
an ambivalent role in their internal struggles; found guilty of high 
treason in 1870. Although he left the country in 1871, his influence 
as an anarchist agitator continued to be felt in Austria.
