d. Munich (Germany), July 2, 1911, conductor and composer. Famous 
for his interpretations of Wagner; from 1886 regularly conducted in 
Bayreuth, made the music of R. Wagner famous in England (1894) and in 
the USA (1903 at the Metropolitan Opera New York); went to Munich in 
1903.
