Registered Design, Protection of, legal protection of models for an 
industrial product; application at the Patent Office or an economic 
chamber for registration in the design register. The design has to be 
published in the Austrian "Musteranzeiger" (Patent/Design Gazette) by 
the Patent Office before protection of the design takes effect. 
Protection is guaranteed for 5 years and can be extended by two 
further five-year periods. First legal regulation in 1858, then 1970, 
law on the protection of registered designs in 1990.
