d. Vienna, Jan. 14, 1963, literary historian, essayist. 1914-1924 
Professor at the University of Freiburg (Switzerland), 1925-1930 in 
Koenigsberg, 1931-1945 in Vienna. Developed a phylogenetic model of 
the concepts of nation and literature in "Literaturgeschichte des 
deutschen Volkes", 4 vols., published in 1938, based on 
typography and demography; friend of H. von  Hofmannsthal and H.  
Bahr.
