b. Vienna, July 29, 1831, 
d. Vienna, Dec. 31, 1872, popular singer, originally a 
meerschaum-turner; great grandfather of Karl  Nagel. Joined the Beer 
Society as a popular singer in 1861; performed together with A. Amon 
(1833-1896) as the Amon & N. Duo, wearing a tailcoat instead of the 
usual costume. Established the political  Wiener Lied as a genre. His 
repertoire comprised more than 1,000 lieder.
