!!!Natterer, Johann

b. Laxenburg (Lower Austria), Nov. 9, 1787, 
d. Vienna, June 17, 1843, zoologist, uncle of Johann August  
Natterer and Josef  Natterer. Explorer, collector of outstanding 
merit. In 1817 took part in the expeditions on the nuptial ships of 
Archduchess Leopoldine; until 1836 travelled through Brazil compiling 
a collection of 12,293 birds and 24,000 insects, which he brought to 
the Natural History Collection in Vienna, now  Museum of Natural 
History, which also holds his collection of indigenous mammals. A 
large part of his collection was destroyed in a fire. Natter donated a 
collection of foreign jewellery and objects from every day life to the 
 Austrian Museum of Ethnology.
