b. Oberdoebling (Vienna), April 29, 1807,
d. Oberdoebling, Aug. 30, 1882, painter of genre scenes and
landscapes. Son of a shoe maker, completed his studies at the Vienna
Academy, but worked as a shoe maker until 1934 due to lack of money
and doubts about his artistic talent; F. Gauermann encouraged him to
start painting again; became one of the most popular genre painters of
his time; in his pictures N. portrayed the everyday life of the common
people in rural Austria, in an unaffected realistic style.
