b. Vienna, May 27, 1684,
d. Vienna, May 6, 1774, officer, Imperial Field Marshal, 1717 Colonel
of an infantry regiment near Belgrade, tutor of Franz Stephan von
Lothringen in 1723, fought in Italy during the War of Polish
Succession, 1737-1739 arrested and imprisoned in Bruenn (Brno) after
having negotiated unfavourable peace terms after the Turkish War. In
1741 entrusted with the supreme command of the Austrian army in
Silesia by Maria Theresia, fought against the Prussian army commanded
by Friedrich II, suffered a devastating defeat on April 10, 1741 in
the battle near Mollwitz and was relieved of office. 1753 commanding
general in Austria, 1755 Imperial War Council president.
