!!!Neue Österreichische Biographie

Neue Oesterreichische Biographie (New Austrian Biography): Preliminary 
work for the edition and renewal of a biographical encyclopaedia begun 
by C. v.  Wurzbach under the name "Biographisches Lexikon des 
Kaisertums Oesterreich" (60 vols., 1856-1890) was started in 1916. The 
intention was to publish a "Bibliographisches Grundbuch" (short 
version) with short biographies, volumes with detailed biographies and 
a bibliography. A. Bettelheim published the first seven volumes of the 
Neue Oesterreichische Bibliographie, vol. 8 was published by E. 
Rollett. In 1946 the Amalthea publishing company took over the series; 
at the same time the Austrian Academy of Sciences began compiling the 
basic works with the aim of publishing them under the title 
"Oesterreichisches Biographisches Lexikon 1815-1950". The latest 
volumes of the Neue Oesterreichische Biographie were published in 1956 
(all vols. from vol.10.will be called "Grosse Oesterreicher") and 1982 
(vol. 21). The Neue Oesterreichische Bibliographie will be continued 
up to the present.
