Neukirchen am Grossvenediger, province of Salzburg, market town in the 
district of Zell am See, alt. 857m, pop. 2,479, area 
165.87 km%%sup 2/%, situated on the River Salzach in the 
Oberpinzgau region in the Hohe Tauern National Park, bi-seasonal 
tourism (372,866 overnight stays). - Administration of the Salzburg 
National Park Fund, training centre of the Austrian mountain rescue 
services, youth hostel, ropeway to the Wildkogel mountain (monocable 
ropeway to the Gensbichlscharte saddle, 2,091m, Wildkogel mountain to 
the northeast, 2,224m). Gothic parish church with a single nave and 
Gothic north tower, interior with Baroque alterations; high altar 
(1781) with figure of the Virgin Mary (around 1500), pulpit (1767), 14 
paintings of the way of the Cross (around 1780). Hochneukirchen Castle 
(first documented mention around 1126, today houses archives and 
kindergarten). Nearby, the ruins of Hieburg and Sulzau Castles, 
Sulzbachfall waterfalls. Traditional farmhouses: Paarhoefe 
(residential building and livestock buildings are separated from each 
other).
