Neumarkt in der Steiermark, Styria, market town in the district of 
Murau, alt 847m, pop. 1,913, area 5.14 km%%sup 2/%, at the 
western foot of the Zirbitzkogel mountain (2,396m) to the southeast of 
the Neumarkter Sattel Pass. - District Court, Employment Services, 
regional health and social security agency; Villa Barbara provincial 
recreation centre, banqueting hall, trade school. Close by, army 
training area in the Seetaler Alpen mountains (municipality of 
Judenburg); dairy, metal processing, construction, wood processing, 
summer and winter tourism. - Forchtenstein Castle, constructed and 
fortified before 1224 (today, "Europahaus"), integrated into the 
partially preserved city walls (3 circular towers); late Gothic parish 
church (1492-1501) with tower (1914), high altar (1735-1740) by B. 
Prandstaetter, side altar with late-Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary, 
Gothic ossuary (1438); column of the Virgin Mary (1717); 2-storey 
houses on the main square (some parts 16th - 17th century).
