Neumayr, Melchior, b. Munich (Germany), Oct. 24, 1845, 
d. Vienna, Jan. 29, 1890, palaeontologist. 1873-1890 first 
Professor of palaeontology at Vienna University. Worked e.g. on 
ammonites of the Jurassic period and the snail fauna of the Slavonic 
Paludina beds; Ch. Darwin praised his work as best proof of his theory 
on the origin of species. 1880 co-founder of the "Beitraege zur 
Palaeontologie Oe.-Ungarns und des Orients".
