!!!Nicolai, Otto

Nicolai, Otto, b. Kaliningrad, Russia (then Koenigsberg), June 9, 
1810, d. Berlin (Germany), May 11, 1849, German composer and 
conductor, 1837/38 and 1841-1847 Kapellmeister and singing teacher in 
Vienna (at the court opera in the Kaerntnertortheater), where he 
established the Philharmonic concerts, the first of which took place 
on March 28, 1842 marking the formation of the  Philharmonic 
Orchestra, Vienna. In his memory the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra 
performs an N. concert every year. Of his works the opera "The Merry 
Wives of Windsor" is best known.
