!!!Niederaltaich

Niederaltaich Abbey, Benedictine abbey in the administrative district
of Deggendorf, Bavaria, founded by the Agilolfingers in the middle of
the 8th century, very important for the colonisation of Austria. In
the 9th century the abbey already owned estates in the Weinviertel
area and in the Wachau region, from the 10th and 11th century also in
the Tullnerfeld area, on the River Ybbs, on the River Wagram (near
Absdorf) and on the River Zaya. The annals of Niederaltaich Abbey
(written 1073-1075) are the main documented source of Austrian history
in the first half of the 11th century. In addition to that, the famous
mediaeval German historian, Abbot Hermann von Niederaltaich
(1242-1273), wrote much on Austria in his annals during the reign of
King Otakar II (published in Monumenta Germaniae Historica SS
17). The Babenberg margrave Leopold died in Niederaltaich on October
18, 1141.
