!!!Niedere Tauern

Niedere Tauern Mountains, part of the central Alpine massif between 
the Rivers Enns and Mur/Mura from the Murtoerl Pass to the 
Schobersattel Pass, northeastern prolongation of the  Hohe Tauern 
Range; they are divided into Radstaedter, Schladminger, Woelzer, 
Rottenmanner Tauern mountains and the Seckauer Alps. The western part 
is situated in the province of Salzburg and forms the border between 
the Lungau und Pongau regions, and a small part of the 
Salzburg/Styrian border. The main part of the Niedere Tauern Mountains 
belongs to Styria. Today, an unglaciated mountain range mainly 
consisting of gneiss and micaceous schist, in the Ice Age heavily 
glacierized; numerous small glacial tarns. Highest peak: Hochgolling 
mountain (alt. 2,862 m) at the Styrian/Salzburg border. Passes: Soelk 
Pass (alt. 1,788 m), Triebener Tauern Pass (alt. 1,278 m), Radstaedter 
Tauern Pass (alt. 1,738 m) and the Tauernautobahn highway. Sparsely 
populated range with forestry and alpine farming, tourism (skiing 
area). Magnesite and graphite deposits at the northeastern edge. (Sunk 
and Trieben mountains).
