!!!Nikisch, Arthur

Nikisch, Arthur, b. Lebeny-Szent-Miklós (Hungary), Oct. 
12, 1855, d. Leipzig (Germany), Jan. 23, 1922, conductor, from 
1866 student at the Vienna Conservatory (under G.  Hellmesberger sr. 
and J.  Hellmesberger sr. as well as under F. O.  Dessoff), 
1874-1877 violinist at the court opera orchestra. 1878 went to 
Leipzig, where he began his international career as a conductor. 
Concentrated on the works of A.  Bruckner. As a conductor he set an 
example for following generations (W.  Furtwaengler). Also worked as a 
composer.

symphony; orchestra phantasy on themes from V. Nessler"s 
"Trompeter von Saeckingen"; string sextet; violin sonata; 
"Christnacht" cantata.
