!!!Nitsch, Hermann

Nitsch, Hermann, b. Vienna, Aug. 29, 1938, painter,
representative of Wiener Aktionismus. Since 1957 has developed the
idea of the "Orgien-Mysterien-Theater" as a synthesis of the arts,
consisting of music, dance, slaughter of animals, etc. and lasting
several days (from 1971 regularly held at Prinzendorf Palace, Lower
Austria); it characterises his complete literary, musical and artistic
œuvre. "Schuettbilder" (where paint is thrown or splashed on the
canvas), resulting from cult-like actions, represent a combination of
panel painting and action painting. 1995 set designs for the Vienna
State Opera.
