Nock Area, western part of the  Gurktal Alps, area to the east of the 
Liesertal valley, consisting mainly of crests, saddles, valleys and 
lake basins without a main valley. The Austrian word "Nocken" stands 
for hilltops rounded by glaciers and mountain ridges made of gneiss, 
mica schist, palaeozoic phyllite and limestone ranges (Rosennock 
mountain 2,424m, Woellaner Nock mountain 2,139m, Eisenhut mountain 
2,441m). The Koenigsstuhl mountain (2,336m) forms a natural border 
between the three provinces of Carinthia, Salzburg and Styria. 
Sparsely populated area with alpine farming and winter tourism. 
Regional centres: Ebene Reichenau, Bad Kleinkirchheim, Radenthein, 
Gmuend, Turrach. On the southern edge: Lake Millstaett, Lake Feldsee 
(Brennsee), Lake Afritzersee; Nockalmstrasse road (toll-road from 
Innerkrems to the north of Ebene Reichenau); Nockberge mountains 
National Park (since 1987, 216 km%%sup 2/%).
