Nothnagel, Hermann, b. Alt-Lietzegoericke (Germany), Sept. 28, 
1841, d. Vienna, July 7, 1905, specialist in internal medicine, 
famous diagnostician; from 1882 head of a hospital for internal 
medicine in Vienna. N. was the first to recognise the importance of 
blood pressure for various diseases and his experimental methods took 
internal medicine to new heights. Pioneer work on the physiology and 
pathology of the nervous system and of the intestines.

Speziellen Pathologie und Therapie, 24 vols., 1894-1908 (ed.; 
vol. 17 written by him: Die Erkrankungen des Darmes und des
