Novara, city in Northern Italy, where Austrian troops led by Field 
Marshal J. J. W.  Radetzky defeated the Piedmontese on March 
23, 1849 and ended the Italian fight for freedom of 1848/49. This 
enabled Austria to keep its Italian possessions until 1859.
