Novi, in Northern Italy, site of a battle during the War of the Second 
Coalition (  (see) Napoleonic Wars) in which the allied Austrian and 
Russian troups gained a major victory over the French revolutionary 
armies on August 15, 1799. Disagreement among the victorious nations 
prevented the outcome from having any real political significance.
