Obdach, Styria, market town in the district of Judenburg, alt.
874 m, pop. 2,068, area 42.88 km%%sup 2/%, north of Obdacher
Sattel pass (955 m) on an ancient trade route to Carinthia dating
back to Roman times. Forest ranger station, biomass heating plant;
manufacturing industry (esp. lawn-mowers), clothing industry,
small-scale tourism during the summer months. Parish church
(Romanesque and late Gothic style, adapted in the 17%%sup th/%
century) with nave and two side aisles (first documented mention in
1207) and West Tower (1757-1769), a late Gothic fresco of St.
Christophorus (early 16%%sup th/% century) and statue of seated St.
Aegyd (around 1470); hospital church (adaptations during the
16%%sup th/% and 17%%sup th/% centuries) with high altar (around
1660-1670) and statues of saints in late Gothic style (around 1470),
in the chapels carved altars (1715 and 1712) and column with statue of
the Virgin Mary (1716); former Rosenbach Castle (reconstruction in
1880); gate tower; group of 15%%sup th/% -century burghers' houses
(town centre).
