Oberkaernten, Upper Carinthia, western part of the province of 
Carinthia, high-alpine region, includes the Drau valley between the 
Tiroler Tor mountain narrow and the end of River Gail, the Moell 
valley, the Lieser valley and the Gail valley; part of the Carinthian 
Hohe Tauern mountains, the Reisseck Mountains and the Kreuzeck 
Mountains, the Nock Mountains, the Gailtal Alps and the Carnian Alps 
(on Austrian territory). Administrative division: political districts 
Spittal an der Drau, Hermagor, Villach City and a large part 
of Villach Land. Main town: Villach. During the Middle Ages 
constituted the domains of Lurn and Ortenburg, from 1809-1814 part of 
the "Illyrian Provinces" of France under Napoleon.
