Oberschuetzen, Burgenland, municipality in the district of Oberwart, 
alt. 355 m, pop. 2,411, area 44.38 km%%sup 2/%, in the 
vicinity of Willersbach stream; since the foundation of the Protestant 
teacher training institution and Gymnasium secondary school from 1845 
to 1847 under pastor G. A.  Wimmer (monument next to the 
Protestant church) cultural centre of southern Burgenland. - Culture 
Centre (campus of the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, 
library), Christophorus-Haus (education and pastoral care centre), 
Pro-Juventute-Haus, various selective secondary schools, including 
Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium, Protestant Realgymnasium and 
Oberstufenrealgymnasium, federal Roman-Catholic boarding school; west 
of O. Sixtina mineral spring (containing carbon dioxide, in use since 
the 19%%sup th/%  century, today bottling of mineral water). 
Small-sized businesses; importance of agriculture (livestock breeding, 
alternative crops). - First documented mention in 1274 as a settlement 
of archers employed to protect the Kingdom of Hungary from invasions. 
Roman-Catholic church with Romanesque origins (reconstructions in the 
19%%sup th/%  century and in 1964), Protestant parish church (1785, 
developed in 1861/1862), tower in 1803. In the vicinity, the village 
of Unterschuetzen with six 18%%sup th/%  century-storage facilities 
for agricultural produce ("Kittingen").
