Ofen (Hungarian name: Buda), German name of the part of Budapest
located on the right bank of the River Danube. Since the 13%%sup th/%
century, site of the royal castle and of St. Matthew´s Church.
Ofen was the residence of the Hungarian court, nobility and civil
servants. From 1541-1686, Ofen was the seat of a Turkish Pasha and in
the 18%%sup th/% century (under emperor Joseph II) became the
capital of Hungary. In 1872 Budapest was formed from Ofen and the city
of Pest on the left bank of the River Danube.
