Orth an der Donau, Lower Austria, market town in the district of 
Gaenserndorf, alt. 150 m, pop. 1,773, area 
33.42 km%%sup 2/%, in the southern Marchfeld region, on the 
northern edge of the Danube wetlands. - Museums of fishing, local 
history, the Danube, and beekeeping (in the castle), Federal 
Experimental Station in Fuchsenbigl (plant breeding), Lower Austrian 
mountain and nature conservation authorities, office of the waterways 
administration (Marchfeld flood prevention dam), research and 
production centre for chemical medicine and biotechnology (Immuno). - 
First documented mention in 864; parish church (formerly fortified 
church, built in the 15%%sup th/%  and 16%%sup th/%  century, 
remodelled in Baroque style in 1689); moated castle (main structure 
built in the Middle Ages, addition in 1550) with Renaissance windows; 
Neuschloss ("New Palace", 17%%sup th/% /18%%sup th/% 
 century); Mariensaeule (monument dedicated to the Virgin Mary, 
1711); pillory (16%%sup th/%  century); houses with late 
historicist façade ornamentation.
