Eastern Orthodox and Independent Churches of Eastern Christianity: 
Beginning in the 16%%sup th/%  and 17%%sup th/%  centuries, Greek, 
Serbian, Romanian, Russian, and Bulgarian communities of the Orthodox 
Churches developed in Vienna, particularly from the time of Emperor 
Joseph II onwards. Today they belong to various patriarchies and 
metropolitanates. The Independent Churches of Eastern Christianity in 
Austria are the Armenian Apostolic, the Syrian Orthodox and the Coptic
