Ostmark, name given from the 19%%sup th/%  century onwards to the 
mediaeval march of the  Babenbergs. Introduced as the compulsory 
designation for Austria under  National Socialism in 1938, abolished 
in 1942 and replaced by the collective term "Donau- und 
Alpenreichsgaue".
