b. Sopron, Hungary (then Oedenburg), May 26, 1848, 
d. June 26, 1886 (Glockner range, Carinthia; climbing accident), 
alpinist. Numerous first ascents in the Dolomites and in the Dachstein 
range. The ice couloir on the Grossglockner mountain, which he was the 
first to climb through, was named after him.
