b. Neustift near Olomouc, Czech Republic (then Olmuetz), May 18, 1884, 
d. Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria), March 11, 1954, Augustinian canon, 
pioneer of the popular liturgical movement. Aimed at renewing the 
liturgy to make the bible and liturgy form one unit. Taught pastoral 
theology at the philosophical-theological college in Klosterneuburg. 
From 1921 liturgical circles; in 1922 the first "Community Mass" 
(later called prayer and singing mass) was celebrated with P. in the 
St. Gertrud's church in Klosterneuburg. 1926 founded the magazine 
"Bibel und Liturgie" and in 1928 "Lebe mit der Kirche" (until 1952), 
1928 a publishing company and the Augustinian printing office, and 
1950 the Klosterneuburg bible apostolate, forerunner of the 
Oesterreichisches Katholisches Bibelwerk (Austrian Catholic bible 
studies association).
